It is a subject few of us talk about, especially in mixed company, but cleansing our colon on a regular basis is very important to our good health and normal bodily functions. Regularity is vital to keeping our body in tune and with the help of a few colon cleanse supplements, we keep that regularity part of our daily life. But, as there are so many supplements on the market, we need to ask which work and which is merely “hype” to sell product and make money?
It needs to be a daily occurrence
Under normal circumstances our body eliminates the food we have eaten at least every eighteen to twenty four hours and if we don’t have a daily bowel movement we feel sluggish, uncomfortable, and even grumpy. What is the function of the human colon?
Part of the alimentary system (from the mouth to the anus), the colon consists of two parts. Foods leaving the stomach must first pass through the small intestine, which in an average adult is approximately twenty one feet in length. Then it moves through the large intestine which is about five feet long. The bulk of our digestive process which is not conducted in the stomach itself is completed as food moves through our intestinal tract and then exits through the anus.
Every thing we eat and drink must pass through the colon. Water is used by the colon to soften and lubricate foods as they pass through and if there is not enough liquid, the stool becomes dry and hard and may not pass on out of the body.
Nature provides fiber to flush our system
Normally we keep “regular” by taking in fiber through various fibrous foods and liquids (particularly water). Carrots, spinach, beets, bananas, almonds, walnuts, raw honey, oats, and prunes are but a few of the helpful foods that are loaded with fiber and assist with flushing our intestines. Whenever waste materials do not pass through quickly enough, they can become impacted in the colon and cause a whole range of problems due to toxin build up.
What works when the fruits are not enough?
Drugstore shelves are loaded with colon cleanse supplements but which work best? The best of them contain a large amount of water. Natural ingredients such as psyllium (from plants) along with herbs instead of chemicals work best because the body recognizes them and they are natural disinfectants.
